This red was ranked as the Best Red Blend in Canada and won a gold medal at the 2009 Canadian Wine Awards.
Deep red/dark purple in colour. The nose is well integrated and intense with aromas of sweet dark fruits, vanilla, ground dark-roast coffee, caramel, molasses, pomegranate, toasted oak, and wild strawberries. Concentrated flavours in the mouth, dense and rich, with great texture and fine grain tannins.
Components of the final blend were vinified separately. Following eighteen months aging in barrel on lees, individual barrels were selected for the 2007 Meritage through a series of tastings and trial blends. The wine was allowed to marry in tank after being racked form barrel, and then was bottled without fining or filtration. Interestingly, the barrels chosen were done so blind and were from a number of Cooperages: Berthomieu, Ermitage, Kelvin, Keystone, Mercury, and Ra doux.
Gold Medal at 2009 Canadian Wine Awards (Ranked as Best Red Blend in Canada)
Richie Roberts’ best reds from his first vintage at Fielding Estate are only just coming to market, having had the opportunity to develop and integrate gracefully in barrel and bottle. As a result, this Merlot-dominant blend is appealing and approachable right from the start. Obvious oak-derived spice and coffee notes add winning complexity to the concentrated plummy fruit on the nose and palate. The oak also adds focus and enhances the structure of this stylish wine that will drink nicely for the next four to six years. - Christopher Waters VINES Magazine
