Richie Roberts grew up in Niagara, so it was only natural that this son of wine country would dream of someday making his own wines. He’s part of the “new generation” of winemakers—talented, willing to explore, and a little bit on the edge. His attraction to wine led him to study at Brock University’s hailed Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute, where he earned numerous awards and scholarships. After four years crafting critically acclaimed wines with one of Niagara’s premium brands, Richie joined Fielding Estate to head up its winemaking team. Richie is very focussed on doing what he does best—creating the best expression of a vintage that he can. In a way, he lets the terroir and the grapes speak to him and sometimes the result is completely unexpected, yet in typical Fielding fashion—extraordinary. Always on the go at home, play and work, Richie’s energy is perfect for the challenges of the profession that are constantly shifting day-to-day. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t take time to slow down once in a while (and take in a glass of wine or even a pint of beer!). The quality of his wines still comes from great skill and great patience.
